A memorial service was held for the Russian Submarine Kursk's 118 crewmembers, their family and friends at the Submarine Memorial on Naval Base Pearl Harbor on August 28, 2000.

Admiral Konetzni, Commander US Submarine Forces Pacific Fleet, spoke of camaraderie and togetherness that exists in the Submarine community and a brotherhood of Submariners that exists throughout the world among all nationalities.

Paul Ferguson, President of the US Submarine Veterans of World War II, noted that the "Kursk's Crew sailed under the red, white and blue of the Russian Republic and while no longer as stanch and enemy, they were far from being our friends.  But here and now we do not question their politics, their military strategy, nor do we honor Russia, but we remember 118 men with whom we share a common calling and similar risk and but for the grace of God and a supportive nation the same fate."  He prayed that God would have mercy on the souls of the men of Kursk.

Both the Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association and the Hawaii Chapter of the Submarine Veterans of World War II laid wreaths during the memorial.

The services were attended by about 200 active duty and retired submariners.
