Memorial Day 2001 May 26, 2001
On Saturday, May 26, 2001, two days before Memorial Day is observed, hundreds of boy scouts from across Hawaii began to gather at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as Punchbowl.
This annual event started at 12pm with a ceremony honoring all veterans who have served our country and thanked the many boy scouts present. After the ceremony, the boy scouts divided up and placed a flag and laid a flower lei on each of the 38,000 graves. The boy scouts finished their task in an amazing fifteen minutes. |

Among the many who were present on this day was a lone bag piper walking along and serenading the graves playing such songs as "Amazing Grace." |

In placing the flags and flower leis, the boy scouts were representing each of us in saying once again to those we owe so much, "Thanks." In the above picture the flags appear to be a part of Punchbowl's dress uniform, standing in ranks representing our past heroes proudly.
