"I was aboard the USS Winslow DD359 when we escorted the Mighty Mo on her shakedown cruise in the Gulf of Paria.  We then escorted her near the Panama Canal for her to join the Pacific Fleet --- Man, What a big ship.."

"My father was a witness to the Japanese surrender on the Missouri that ended WWII.

My father was a very proud American and he instilled in all of us a deep respect for all of your efforts during WWII.  He told the story over and over of how he stood in the rain for hours so Truman could announce that any man from Missouri could shake his hand - being from New York he had a few choice words for Truman.

In my father's obituary (ironically he died on Memorial Day) the local newspaper made a special story of an American Sailors story - the Japanese surrender and my father the witness.  My uncle's comment was that by the article's tone you would swear my father (1 of thousands of sailors) must of loaned the president the pen to sign the treaty."

"I served on the Mighty MO during the Persian Gulf War. I have to say that I am honored to have served on a ship that has such a huge piece of later 20th Century history. If I could have, I would have spent my whole Navy career on the mighty battleship. Anyone who served on the Missouri during the Gulf War, and was in OI Division, and reads this, WRITE ME! Mike Dent, Chill Will, Rhodes...ya'll know who you are!

"When the Missouri arrived at Pearl Harbor in August (I believe it was August) of 1950 on her way to Korea, following the Thimble Shoals incident, ten (10) of us sailors from the Coast Guard Cutter Iroquois that was tied up at a nearby slip, assisted in handling lines six through ten when she tied up at 10-10 dock. She was a beauty and line ten, a steel cable was heavy.

If anyone would have the exact date of her arrival at Pearl that day I would appreciate hearing from you.  Thanks"

"I was attached to MSB Div 1 (minesweeping boat div. 1)  We were sweeping inside Wanson harbor (North Korea) when we started taking small arms fire from the beach.  We put out a radio call for some help.  A DD came in and took hits from a point of land.  They had a 155hoz. on r.r. trackes.  The Might Mo. came up North and laid down a series of rounds.  All were on the Mark.... We were using LCVP's to sweep with, as we had 20 miles to go to the LSD we were TAD on.  As we went past the MO. we were towing the old man behind us on a surfboard.  The Mo. was at GQ.  I wish to thank the Captain and crew of the Mighty Mo.  You saved my butt.  JPeer"

"My father, James Rupert Kennedy was on the Missouri in World War II.  I'm not sure what year and what his title was.  He passed away in October of last year.  He once showed me a picture of the ship he had framed with the list of his crew.  I really would like to get one just like it to remember him by.  If you can help I sure would be grateful.  Thank you Jim R. Kennedy Jr."

"SILVER SERVICE

This is the story as told by Elmina McCoy. Her husband; Robert was born in Springfield, Missouri. His family had became friends with President Harry S. Truman and his family. Mr. McCoy was an officer in the Navy.

This silver was supposedly on the USS. Missouri and used at the time of the surrender of Japan in World War II on August 14, 1945.

When the USS. Missouri was decommissioned, some of the silver was given to Margaret Truman, who in turn passed it on to Elmina McCoy. These pieces were what she had at the time of her passing which was December. 2,2001.in Tacoma Washington.

At this time numerous pieces of the fine silver are in the possession of a good family friend ,who took good care of her before her passing."
